Toshiba to drop HD-DVD
Sunday, 17 February 2008
It seems that the next generation format is finally over as more and more sources around the world confirm that Toshiba has decided to stop HD-DVD production. "First reported by the Japanese public broadcaster NHK and later confirmed by Toshiba itself, the next-gen format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is finally over, with Toshiba planning on stopping production of HD DVD players. The battle, which has raged on for the last couple of years, has often been compared to the Betamax-VHS battle of the MID 1980's and has slowed down the development of what movie studios hope will become a multi-billion dollar industry over the next decade. " HDDVD
The final blow to HD DVD and Toshiba took place yesterday when the mammoth retailer Wal-Mart announced they would go Blu-ray exclusive beginning in June. Other recent news, such as Best Buy and Netflix's decisions to support Blu-ray must have also weighed heavily on Toshiba's decision. "We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said a Toshiba source, who also added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.

How to rip a DVD to the hard disk using DVDFab HD Decrypter
Friday, 14 December 2007
Most the DVD editing / converting tasks begin by ripping the DVD data in your hard disk, for various reasons. For example, DVDs are encrypted and by default most programs do not read these CSS encrypted files. Ripping the DVD files to the hard disk takes care of that and speeds up the process greatly as you only access the DVD once and then read all the data from the hard disk which is of course much faster and reduces the stress on your DVD drive that would have to keep working for many hours in case you were transcoding the DVD to another format.

Fedora 8 Review
Saturday, 10 November 2007
A new release of Redhat-sponsored Fedora is always in the headlines of the Linux world as it is one of those distributions that push Linux forward by introducing exciting new features. Fedora has always been something like a test platform for Redhat's commercial product, the Enterprise Desktop/Server, however recently we have seen some changes suggesting that Fedora has decided to mature and try to become a good alternative for the average Linux desktop user. I have used Fedora 7 for about 4 months myself until I moved over to Arch Linux so in this review I will try to point out what has been improved other the older versions.

New features in comment system
Monday, 05 November 2007

We have recently introduced some useful features in our comments system which allows you to comment on guides or blog posts. First of all there is now a comment's control panel which can be found here and which allows you to see all the comments you have made. In the same page you can control two of the new features, comments subscriptions (that gets you notified when a new comment is made in an article you have selected) and Favorites which is a list where you can add your favorite articles for easy later access.

Besides that, you can now add an article to a social bookmark site (Facebook, del.icio.us, Digg, StumbleUpon to name a few) easily from the article's page or email it to a friend. There are also some comments specific improvements like comment voting, report comments to the admin and Trackback URL that you can use to link us with your blog. We hope you enjoy using these new features.

Downloads section updated, no registration required
Monday, 05 November 2007

We are happy to announce an update of our download database's software. On the outside you won't see much (other than the nice new icons) but the backend is much improved. Starting from today we also allow everyone to download right away, removing the restriction that allowed only registered users to download. The number of downloads from our site up to this day count up to 200,000 files served and almost one Terrabyte of data transfered. You can browse the files here.

In the following days we will try to improve our downloads section by updating software to their latest versions and adding more video-related programs.
