Title: Ripping/Copying Bilingual Disks Post by: sir_christopher on July 20, 2008, 10:42:42 PM I encountered a peculiar problem when trying to back up a copy of Disney/Pixar's Cars movie, which my son watches at least once per day, and is starting to develop problem spots. I live in Canada, and the copy I own is English/French. I had tried to rip it using dvdshrink, but that program kept choking on a failed CRC check (oddly, in the credits, which is not where we were finding problems when watching the disk). So I switched over to linux, and used a program called dvd9to5 which basically serves the same function.
My problem does not concern the selection of the proper audio stream, nor am I including subtitles. Rather, the odd thing is that when I play back the ripped video, there are a number of locations where the producers included repeated frame sequences with French text in place of the English. For example, right off the top with Pixar's animated desk lamp logo sequence, after it fades and shows "20 Years", it then immediately cuts to the tail end of the fade and then displays "20 Ans" (the French translation). It appears that when watching the production DVD, once the player knows what language you are watching in, it will show only one frame sequence or the other, but in my ripped video, my player just plays both frame sequences straight through. Has anyone seen anything like this, and more importantly, solved that problem? I notice when I opened up the video in dvd::rip, I have the option of ripping either of 2 viewing angles, so maybe the alternate frames were implemented as alternate viewing angles? Title: Re: Ripping/Copying Bilingual Disks Post by: sir_christopher on August 11, 2008, 07:34:38 PM Unfortunately, Xillisoft Video Converter just gagged on it. It was unable to correctly read the VOB files, and instead thought all the files were 0kbps files that were many thousands of hours in length.
Any other suggestions? I have Windows, Linux (dual boot) AND OS X (a mac mini) at my disposal. Title: Re: Ripping/Copying Bilingual Disks Post by: connyrn on September 22, 2008, 12:55:09 PM Sir Christopher,
