I had a few minutes this morning, so I did a quick comparison of divx vs xvid using screenshots.  The DVD I used was Shrek 2.  I encoded it twice, once for each codec, and both with FUW v.2.1a and the speed/quality slider all the way to the right (towards quality).  All other settings were left at the default of where FUW puts them.

I opened the videos using Virtualdub, and did my best to make sure they were at the same spot in the movie before taking capturing them.  I tried to catch scenes I thought might indicate differences between the different technologies.  If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please post them.

In your opinion then what do you think are the best? Obviously you can watch them both and get a better idea than screenshots?

I am no video expert, I like FUW as it is easy to use, and use ot for PPC and now iPod backups. Me looking at it they both look the same, maybe DivX a tadge better? but thats being a bit picky

They look very similar to me too.  I think his chest armor looks better in the xvid screenshot, but I have to pay attention to tell the difference.  I'll check out the videos one by one and see if I can make out a difference.

It may be that this isn't really the movie to test them on.  If anyone knows for sure, I'd be happy to try something else if I have the DVD.

Divx 5.2.1, Xvid whatever comes w/FUW as far as I know.

I've got a newer version of DivX, but haven't installed it on my media server as I wasn't sure if each of the players would be able to play files converted with it.

I think your right. Because the movie is computer generated I doubt that the colours used represent the depths of those in real life. Like the screen grabs though, be cool if you could do it with something else shot on film.

Having done some tests myself in the past (a lot less accurately than you - simply encoded small sections and watched them) I always found DivX (5.2.1) to look slightly better to my eyes on my setup. I guess other factors come into it as well like encoding time (some sort of quality to time ratio).

To be fair though I reckon you should probably test using DivX version 6 (I know it isn't free but it is the latest technological development and kind of like for like with the lastest XviD build)

What do you think?

Is DivX now not free? ie the v6? thats bad, isnt there a free codec though as per v5 had, I know you have to pay for their encoders but cant you now even get the codec free for use in our own encoding program ie FUW?

Just been on the DivX.com website, the DivX codec is still free it quotes

"The free DivX Play Bundle comes with the DivX Player™ and the DivX codec. You also receive a free 6-month trial of the DivX Pro™ codec with the DivX Play Bundle"

SO can you tell me what you mean when you say "To be fair though I reckon you should probably test using DivX version 6 (I know it isn't free but it is the latest technological development and kind of like for like with the lastest XviD build)"?

cheers

Hmmm i tried divx6 ..new stuff includes insane quality and psychrovisual enhancements (masking and shaping), which is much sharper than 5.21

Perhaps you can try a short clip using ver 5.21 and 6. There is some difference Smiley

I just meant I liked your post - I would be interesting (obviously time permitting etc) on what conclusions you can draw by doing a similar comparison to the one you have done here using the very latest versions of DivX/XviD i.e. try encoding using v6 instead of 5.2.1 of DivX as from what I've read and as cavey states it works very differently to previous builds.

With regards to the free aspect I thought for a codec (coder AND decoder) to be deemed free it costs nothing and therefore doesn't need to be paid for in 6 months or by deleting the reference in C:\documents and settings... and reinstalling!

No problem, I'll give it a whirl.  While reluctant to upgrade DivX on my media server, I have no issues with trying it on my desktop.

Any thoughts on a movie?  I think I own the first two Matrix movies if that's a good one.  Any suggestions?

You could try at lease one very fast scene, and one static scene from any of these.

i would say as well download and install the latest version of xvid
http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml
and don't enable the "use internal xvid codec" in fairuse wizard

so it will be a fair match between the lastest versions of the codecs

and i would say, use the Matrix 1 for the battle (especially, the shoot out scene in the looby)
as it uses less cgi, and plus it is always used in the codec comparison in doom9  Cool

and here is the fun part  Grin
take the screenshots, and don't tell us which one is which
just put then in 2 groups like before and name them A & B, X & Y, 1 & 2, or what ever you want
and let us have a go, and tell you which group do we think looks better
and afterward reveal for us the true identity of the 2 groups  Cheesy Wink

I can do that.

I would have already had some of this done, but I got hitup by two nieces for computer help and my sisters PC showed up via UPS today for me to replace her crashed HD.

Ahhh family support...gotta love it! Smiley

Sorry I haven't had a chance to get to this yet.  I know it sounds like excuses, but my wife was out of town visiting a very ill young boy she used to care for in a foster home, so I was on full time Daddy duty for our 2yr old and 3yr old girls all weekend.

Hopefully I'll have some time this week.

definitely xvid looks better!

1st pic - left shoulder's armour shines more realistic..
3rd pic - Divx screenshot looks blurier than the xvid's one.. check the dark bit at those trees on the corners
