Since FUW 2.6 is uncapable of write the output file on my computer I want to know if FUW 2.5 can run on WIndows Vista. I know that under normal cincumstantec it can't but if I set it to run on 'compatibility mode' or 'administrator mode' it will work?

Thanks.

Continuing...

I run a few tests here and seems FU 2.5 RUNS on Windows Vista if I set "administrator mode". The output file was correctly created (FU 2.6 hangs on writing output file routine on my new machine).  Angry

If you are in trouble with 2.6 hanging problem, remove it and reinstall version 2.5. Then, right click the program icon and select 'properties'. After that, in "path" tab (sorry if the tab names are not exact because I'm translating from my Brazilian Portuguese version and tab names can be a little different) you click on "advanced" button and set option "run like administrator". Then, in "compatibility" tab you must set option "run this program like administrator" and click on Ok.

You're done. FU 2.5 will run correctly on Windows Vista.  Grin

Well, the good news are FU 2.5 works on Vista as I told you before. The bad news are FU 2.5 hangs on writing output file too, just like 2.6. So, there is a problem with FU and Vista or with my hardware.

By the way, my computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, mother Asus P5B Deluxe, 2x1 GB Samsung 800 PC-6400 DDR2, 1 HD Sata 400 GB, 1 HD PATA 200 GB, nVidia 7900 GS 256 MB and DVD-R/W LG dual layer. All drivers are updated, except for video card but it will not cause the incredible slow writing error problem that I have.

Anyone can help me? Anyone had this writing problem and solved it?

More information...  Embarrassed

I run more tests. The problem is hardware. Not a failure but some incompatibility.

I installed Windows XP in this new machine and FU 2.5 slows down the writing too, like FU 2.5 and 2.6 with Vista. I selected 2 episodes from a DVD series. The first one was correctly converted. The second  frozen during output file creation. It does not freezes properly. It became so slow that  in 2 hours it only saved half the output file and then I cancelled the process.

My machine is brand new with a balanced set of components. I really don't know what is happening here. My old computer (AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1 GB RAM 400, 2 HD PATA) was slower than this one but never gave me this kind of problem.

I wonder if FU have some kind of problem with SATA...

Any ideas, please!?

Another piece of the puzzle... (I hope)

I realized that FU uses 2 processors (my CPU is a dual core, you know) in first pass but only one CPU in second pass. Why? Can it be the cause of problem? How to disable the second core during conversion to run some tests?

Well, here we go again. I made some progress in problem diagnostics but unfortunately not in solution. Seems to me that depends on changing some internal options in FU. Let's talk about it.

I discovered that the problem is related to VirtualDubMod, the modified and unsuppoerted version of VirtualDub. As far I know, the development of this version stopped because some of your features are now included in official VirtualDub.

During the final writing process, I pressed ESC instead clicking on "cancel" and the processing window of VirtualDubMod poped-up on my screen. Here are the 'main' and 'log' screens:

Main

Log

So I searched the VirtualDub forum for "livelock" and there are messages relating some older versions of software with this kind of problem and the solution is "disable multithreading options". Our problem here is how to do this. There are no options in FU to set this. So, the software must be changed to make this multithread optional to resolve this or, perhaps, jump to official VirtualDub if it has became a substitute for Mod version.

The 'mod' version is used mainly for VBR audio, like MP3 VBR or OGG Vorbis (that is my preferred, by the way). So, VirtualDub will only be an adequate substitute for VirtualDubMod if it can handle this kind of encoded audio in your last release and I don't know if it does.

Now I really need some help in here: someone closer ump, the FU developer, can PLEASE tell him to make this change in FU as soon as possible? I bought a new computer mainly to make my conversions faster with FU and simply can't use this amazing software anymore. I know that I am only an user but the fact is multicore CPUs are more and more frequent so this problem will affect more people as time passes.

Please, tell me if this can be done in a really near future or if I should start searching another conversion tool. I really don't want to do this because FU is a damn good software, in my oppinion.

Thank you.

Yes, I believe you. There are a lot of people with Core 2 Duo by now and few problems reported. Or they don't know how to diagnosticate the writing problem issue (there are posts here about it) or, more probably, may be some specific hardware configuration causing this.

My exact hardware is:

mobo Asus P5B Deluxe
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2x1 GB Samsung 800 PC-6400
nVidia 7900 GS DDR3 256 MB video card

I really don't know what is happening. As an ultimate test, I reinstalled all my system (WinXP) and installed KL Codec Pack Full this time, instead the Mega Pack. I will run a few tests more and tell you later if found any changes.

Chapter 34...

Well, everything worked fine until this night. I am running FU 2.5 on a WinXP Pro with KL Codec Pack Full. All converting sessions finished successfully until then. Last night, FU freezed again on 1st convertion job.

So, the problem is independent of OS (Vista and XP are affected) and codec pack (KL Mega and Full). I really believe that is related to my hardware but other users with similar computers had not problem like this.

So, I give up. The lack of support, the missing of developer and total absence of a decent support gets me no other chance: I give up using FU, unfortunatelly.

Don't spare your money. Look for some supported software. Ok, ok. It was a donation. I don't regret that. I was good while it worked. But the last year was disastrous for FU. The users are on your own. Makes no sense keeping donations for an almost dead software.

If I found a better software to my conversion sessions I will publish it here in respect to several users, orphans like me.  Angry

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately, this version doesn't resolved my problem. But I believe that I found the solution. The real one, this time.

Take a look at this: http://www.dvd-guides.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,91/topic,14243.0
