THIS IS COPIED IN "GENERAL QUESTIONS"

Hi. I'm new to the forum, AND to all this encoding... seriously, I thought I was "the man" for being able to DVD Shrink and ISO burn my "personal backup" DVDs.

Here's the thing.  I recently purchased an ARCHOS 404 MP4 type device.  It supports (with plugin) PLAYING VIDEO IN  H.264  or in MPEG-2 (both)   with AAC sound.

This is from their page:

Video playback**:     MPEG-42 (ASP@L5 AVI, up to DVD resolution)
WMV (MP@ML, up to DVD resolution).
With optional software plug-ins:
-  H.264 up to DVD resolution and AAC sound. (video files downloaded from the internet with .mp4, .m4v or .mov extensions)
-  MPEG-2 MP@ML up to 10 Mbps (up to DVD resolution) and AC3 stereo sound. (.vob, .mpg and .ps extensions)

I want to be able to use my commercial DVD as the SOURCE  and make a "backup" with H.264 Encoding  to play on this unit.

ANYONE KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT?

I only know how to use DVD Shrink to rip and make an ISO and burn (sometimes Nero 6,  sometimes DVD Decrypter).

If anyone knows, can they please post,  or EMAIL  awfreak@gmail.com   with what i need and general outline.

I was reading there are some FREEWARE programs? can you suggest (i read Nero 7 has something?  i might have access to that commercial program too.)

Thank you kindly.  Oh.... is H.264 and AAC sound worth it? does it save much space and really improve the quality?  These are ADD-ONs I must purchase for the unit.

Thanks again !

Jim

I noticed that there is special offer about the moyea ipod video converter suite on http://www.my-video-converter.com. The suite works to convert dvd and other kinds of videos to mp4 with H.264. H.264 is a standard for video compression. It is stated as a state-of-the-art video codec, which can provide exellent quality with quite low data rate.
Audio with AAC is generally better than AMR.
You can try the suite to see if it works.
