H.264 for xbox360 versus TiVo S3?

Greetings,

I searched the forum but didn't find the answer I am looking for. I would appreciate it if any one could respond to my questions:

1. I an using FairUse Wizard's (ver 2.5) to encode h.264 video files and it works great on my TiVo S3. However, the same file will not play on my XBOX 360 elite. Does anyone know what setting on FUW I need to use to make it work for XBOX 360? Is there a different h.264 encoder that will work for both XBOX 360 and TiVo S3?

2. What should be the reccomended h.264 video file size for HD and DVD movies? Is there a specific file size that yields the best quality?

Hi,

you can have a look in this guide for creating a compatible file:

Or you can use some kind of streaming software (like TVersity) for Xbox that lets you play any H264 by streaming it from your PC.

About the size, a bigger file is also a better quality one. Just find what fits your needs. Personally I create movies that are about 2.1GB each so that I can fit 2 of them in a DVD in case I need to store them or take them with me on a journey.

I really appreciate this help. For most of the movies I am encoding now on h.264 are about 4GB. I'll try encoding for 2GB and see if I could retain excellent quality and also save up on disk space.

The X-Box h.264 guide is perfect!!!

Actually target quality should be chosen depending on where you want to playback the file at and what resolution will use. If you want to play it in a SDTV or a small PC monitor 2GB are more than enough. In the other hand if you will stream it to a new HDTV or a PC monitor bigger than 22' inch you should keep your movies at 4GB+ in order to preserve the original quality.

Of course your source medium should be a BluRay disc or a DVD. Otherwise there is no reason to convert an 1.3GB XviD to a 4GB H264 as you will gain nothing in quality. As a matter of fact anything more than 4GB for a DVD (assuming you will keep at least one 5.1 stream) is an overkill as well. To create a near-perfect rip of a BluRay however I would suggest something near 8-9GB.
