Can anyone tell me if its safe to have it running/converting/burning in the background while one is doing other things online?Or will it mess up the process?

I would say not to worry about it unless you are noticing problems.

Surfing the internet should not cause too much stress, other tasks, like photo treatment might.

Depends really on your computer.
