problem: I rip a DVD and then encode using the "Tivo HD" setting, but the resulting file is an avi.  When I drop that into my Tivo2go folder, the Tivo doesn't see it.  If I rename it .mpeg then the Tivo sees it but when I transfer it to the Tivo it will not play.

Not sure if this matters, but I just reinstalled windows XP over the weekend, then I downloaded FairUse a couple of days ago.  So maybe my problem is that I don't have a codec?  If I select "Codec Settings" the only two codecs available are x264 and XviD (I think Tivo uses Mpeg 2, right?)

Any help is appreciated.

The TiVO encoding mode was successfully tested, but I'll test it again.

thanks for looking into it.  In my post, I mispoke when I said that Tivo HD mode produces *.avi's.  It actually produces *.mp4 files.  The x264 mode produces avis.  Regardless, the tivo desktop and the tivo itself only see *.mpg.

I have a series 3 tivo by the way.

Yes,  please let us know how this was intended to be used with a Tivo HD.  Currently with the just released TivoHD version 9.3 software the THD only naitively supports mpeg2 files in an .mpg container.  Resolution up to 720p and AC3 audio up to 448kbps.  Any other file formats or codecs require transcoding to transfer to a TivoHD either via the TivoDesktopPlus application, PyTivo or other app.

Thanks

Rat Killer, try this:

http://zatznotfunny.com/dvdshrink.htm

It works for me for regular DVDs.  I haven't tried any HDDVDs yet.

Thanks, I already use dvdFab.  I was just wanting to know how the author of the tivo output feature in FU was intending it to be used.  I use it already to produce high quality xvids so using it for Tivo transfers as well would be useful.
