i always noticed on version 2.6 that my CPU usage use to run at about 86% to 91%

which i was happy with, one theory i had was the overhead that is lost, (although still couldn't say why 100% wasn't being utilized)

however now on version 2.8, CPU utilization is gone down to 76% to 81%,

it seems as though it's using less of the maximum available, which of course is becoming a concern now as that is 25% of total CPU being wasted,

tried some other programs, and they use MAX, AutoGK, Dr-DIVX (which is awful, and so bloody buggy.....better not get on that issue here)

thought you should know,

tested with DivX and Xvid, and same thing,

any chance of adding a 3rd track encode option, as DivX is certified now to have 3 tracks embedded in to there stream, which is pretty cool when there are 2 lots of director commentary (2nd commentary is usually the actors and producers track)

as the only software that allows a 3rd track option is AutoGK, and AutoGK doesn't have the quality slider that FUW has, not only that DivX has come a long way now and i have to say better then Xvid now (only took them 16 months to catch up with Xvid, if only Xvid was still in main stream support) but there is no other software out there that support 3rd tracks, none, it's a joke, even some of the big companies still don't support the 3rd track option,

possibility because all the software is inside fairuse itself, does that have any overhead cost, because it's strange how AutoGK happily utilizes all the CPU,

or perhaps some of the Filters are not SSE 2 (and 3 for me) versions.

i always use ESS Speed MAX quality, never use anything else, as that's the one of the great things about FUW, is the ability to set a quality mode, it's amazing how many programs don't have this ability, and the one that do require knowledge on all the settings interfacing with the codec in question at the time, i'm not good at the stuff, and if i did (could) learn it then i would go the whole hog, and learn avisynth and virtualdubmod, and all the rest of it that is required to do a manual convert, which of course is no thankyou, far to busy with work, family and all the rest of it,

i can't say about total time of encoding, but i can only assume following logic, if my CPU is not being used, or more specifically being used less then what it was before, then the total time of encoding is not really the point i was making, the issue is that my there is 25% of CPU Utilization not being utilized, and that is a concern for me, as somewhere in the process something is holding back FUW of ripping MAX CPU,

as for overheating, that isn't a issue no more mate, All AMD X2 cpu's come with "Cool & quiet" technology, and my BIOS has been set for 75 Celsius so my CPU fan will speed up to maintain this temp, further more, AMD has strict regulations concerning how BIOS's (safe guards) are implemented on motherboards supporting modern day Processors, and i assume Intel does the same as well, overheating problems is a thing of the past, as motherboards will instantly kill power if there is a overheating problem, (unless of course one was stupid and over clocked there CPU) which i never overclock anything, it isn't worth the risk,

as for 3rd audio track, yes i should of explained better, lets say i have a DVD, it is "Armageddon" and on this DVD is

1 - Film
2 - Main sound track
3 - Audio Commentary (Director and producer)
4 - Audio Commentary (actors and others that were connected to the film)

as you can see, there is 3 audio tracks in total, well in the past AVI container had strict rules (Xvid) saying that i would only be able to have 2 of those track,

but DivX Container (Not AVI) now officially support 3 audio tracks, that would mean i could have all 3 audio tracks in with my film and still be able to play them on certified DivX players (i believe the DivX container would be required though) so in other words, rename the AVI extension to DivX instead, and of course this would be for DivX encoding only, but this would be brilliant, as i always like to keep the extra audio tracks, and more and more DVD's are coming out with 2 commentary's now, which would mean i would require 3 audio tracks to be encoded, but like many other programs, your program only supports 2 audio tracks, and i would imagine it would not be too difficult to support the 3rd,

oh, whilst here, and save opening up a new thread,

been encoding the other way lately, AVI > DVD,
tried many open source and commercial programs, and they all fail very bad in one way or another, open source is bad for normal reasons, over a 1,000 settings to learn, and impossible amount of reading required which for the lame is out of the question,

the only one that fulfilled my requirements nicely, and more importantly, a program that brought stability (the 2nd best had to be "The Film Machine" had good options, but one main draw back, KLite codecs was heavily depended on, and KLite codecs had to be setup in a specific way, which i never could do, further more, it's just bad in stability, but did have the best output, and support 3 of the top encoders for low rate bit compression, although HCEnc fails badly, procoder 2 was far superior, but i think that had something to do with the film machine rather then HCenc, unless Hcenc does not like compressing AVI material) and that was "TMPGEncDVDAuthor" really nice program, excellent results, very good stability, but quite dear although i feel is justified, but the one thing that is a bummer, you have to use the built in Encoder, which ok for high bitrate, but only barely acceptable with low bit rates, and i feel that procoder and perhaps HCEnc could do a better job (although not sure about HCEnc, as mentioned above, the films i did get to work with "The film Machine" came out very very bad, macroblocking all over the screen, it was dreadful, my target size was 2.2GB (2 films on a DVD-5) and the film encoded was "Enchanted"

just a idea, if you did do a version 3, as i can't think of anyway that 2.8 can be improved anymore, you've done such a lovely job, the ASP codecs get pushed to the very MAX, and the hard work is done for you (ME),

one little thing, i still think the De-Interlacing could be improved a little more, still getting a weird screen coming through, like the interlacing is still there a little, (i have good attention to detail) although this isn't a problem, nearly all stuff is progressive anyway, because of the better compression achieved, and better quality as well,

any questions just ask, and i hope i explained my self better this time,

only it would be nice to find out why FUW is not using all CPU power, and what ever you did from 2.6 > 2.8 defiantly had a affect, because what ever was touched also affected the CPU usage, as it went down,

nearly every program I've used other then yours always uses 90% or more, and only a few is as low as 90%, most up up with the 96-99& mark,

I believe the forum server logs your IP, but no one else sees anything but "Logged," so no worries there.

And I agree with your logic, everything being equal it seems the encoding would take longer if it's utilizing less cpu time. I can only guess why, but for whatever reason the Divx codec has always seemed to utilize less processing power when I increase the quality settings. Maybe ump has increased the quality for the ESS slider.

Maybe some time I'll compare divx encoding speeds using different quality settings, bus speeds, and processing steppings on my computer. maybe extreme quality mode in divx is more demanding on other system components instead of the CPU.

I used to encode all my divx movies the manual way, as you say. I've found it's not worth the trouble unless you'll be distributing it and quality is critical, otherwise FU takes 10x less time and does the trick amazingly well.
