basically i have a video with overlapping subtitles in .mkv format but this is not a problem since the overlapping subtitle is actually a note putted in there that do not interfere with the other subtitle. the problem is when i burn it to dvd. when i play it the notes putted in there are replacing the actual subtitle (within its time frame) with itself. is there anyway i could fix this without changing the format/style/font of the subtitle? if its not possible a guide would really be appreciated

That kinds of situation just caused by the converter you used, Some converter is not fully developed, so the subtile time axes sometimes mixed with the picture time axes. I suggest you use xilisoft video editor to modify it . And it will be OK .!
