I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and the Vista Codec Pack which gives me explorer (as well as WMP 11 library entries) thumbnails for nearly every video format around, including .mkv and .mp4, of which I have dozens of vid files.

I used to use Fair Use Wizard a lot in XP, but I didn't get MP4 thumbnails in XP, so I wouldn't have noticed any change.
But I love my across-the-board MP4 thumbnails in Vista, and each and every time I've tried installing Fair Use Wizard 2.8, the thumbnails are gone at next reboot!
Is there a way to get Fair Use Wizard to stop disabling my MP4 thumbnails? Thanks in advance...!

This is probably a bug in FU itself, not a setting you can change. Are you sure you are not changing .mp4 files assosiation after FU install?

Anyway you should email support asking:

No I didn't change file associations.

But I found a fix for the time being. I found an old install on my laptop of FU 2.5 (before they got very deeply into mp4 encoding) and THIS version does not disable my mp4 thumbnails.
Which is great cause the thing I loved FU for the most was quality Xvid encoding for my portables.
So I'm happy for now:)

Glad you found a solution.

Tbh I was never interested in thumbs in Windows as they show the first frame of the video and such are pretty useless. (a full folder of anime episodes would all appear as black images).

FYI - with the very awesome, and free Haali Media Splitter, you can offset the first thumbnail frame - it's set to 100 by default, so you NEVER get black squares...

Thanks for the info. Smiley

For about 4 years know I use Linux to browse the web and view my videos, I load Windows just for video editing and gaming, I never really searched a way to "fix" the thumbnails.
