I converted a 640x480 AVI file to a 720x480 DVD MPEG. Burnt same and the output was not too good. Converted the 640x480 file to 480x480 SVCD AND THE MOVIE WAS BETTER. Is there a conversion between AVI dimensions and what is best to convert to? I know you can convert to whatever but the output is anything but desirable. Thank you.

Generally when the resolution gets bigger the quality drops. If the AVI file is hig bitrate then there is not a big problem with a conversion like yours. Still the AVI will be a little bit better, but actually you can\'t avoid that, if the AVI file has lower resolution.

The 640x480 avi file has 96 kbps. When you said high bitrate what figures are consifered high and low.

No way 96kbps!!!

That\'s the audio for sure.

For DivX/XviD good bitrates are over 700/800 kbps with that resolution.

Probably 740kbps?

If it is that small, it should be like 80x60!

Nope-right clicked on xxxxDivX.AVI file-under properties
was 640x480 pixels,BitRate 96kbps, 23 fps, 74 kbps and
Audio Format Lame MP3.
At any rate converted it to a DVD 720X480 and burnt same-
audio sync was not too good. Converted it to 480x480 SVCD and burnt same with DVD X MAKER. TMPGenc Author would not mess with a SVCD
Format. X MAKER converts to a DVD format for you. Was better.
I imagine there are factors that go into changing an avi format
other than resolution.
Still you learn when something goes wrong.
