I have used your guid on conveting vcd to dvd using TMPGenc which was great as i now have a dvd on my hard drive which was originaly a vcd. My problem is that when i go to write it to dvd I get a message from my burning software that there was a problem with the dvd r and suggests i try another one, which stil dosent work. I know this should work as after i had this problem i sucessfully backed up one of my dvds. I used exactly the same burning software (which came with the dvd writer) and the same make of dvd r. What is the problem?

Thanks for your help

It would be more than helpful if you could tell me exactly the error message.

Sorry, it says \"There was a problem writing to disc. You can try again by clicking the retry button. You will need another blank disc ready\" I get the same message using another make of DVD R that also works fine with other projects.

Hmm, this is pretty \"general\".

What burning program do you use? Try using something like CopyToDVD.

I have tryed CopyToDVD which works fine, it writes my current project fine (which is more than my last softwar did) but neither my dvd player or my dvd drive on my computer is able to read it, whereas if i backup a current dvd using the same setup, it reads fine, So its definatly not the media, but thats about as much as i can work out.

Have a look in this small and non-complete FAQ I am writing and see if you can find something:

Problem: I burned my DVD and it works fine in my PC and not my standalone DVD player. What should I do?
Possible Solution: First of all try to try some other media. Maybe the 100 bulk DVD-Rs you got just do not work with your DVD player. Have a look here for a small list of suggested media.
If this does not work try changing between DVD-R and DVD+R if you burner supports dual format. You can also have a look at a very nice list of standalones that Videohelp has here and try to find what type of media yours likes.
Next thing you can try is burning in lower speed. Still no joy? Try changing burning program (CopyToDVD is a good alternative) and of course the movie you are trying to burn.
Know Problems: Some old versions of DVD Shrink create problematic DVD files if you use Pioneer 120S for ripping. Get the latest DVD Shrink version here.

Problem: The DVD burns successfully and plays in both my PC and standalone, but suddently when in the 2/3s of the movies everything freezes.
Possible Solution: This problem is pretty common and usually has to do with problems that Windows have with some IDE controllers and chipset. Usually this problem is resolved with new drivers, especially if you are using a motherboard using nVidia\'s nForce2 Ultra400 you should rush and download the new drivers from here. If you are using another chipset, try installing updated drivers and if they do not work try using the original Windows IDE drivers instead. Also have a look in the DVD Shrink note above.

Problem: Burning start but it\'s very slow, taking hours to finish!
Possible Solution: You need to check is if DMA is enabled. When in WindowsXP go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click system and then go to the Hardware tab, where you need to click the Device Manager button. There have a look in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and double click the Primary and Secondary IDE Channel and look in the Advanced Settings tab if DMA is enabled for all devices, especially for your DVD-R, but for your hard disk too. If not try to enable it from the drop-down menu.
If you cannot enable it, you need to have a look in the BIOS (usually by pressing DEL when your PC boots) and check out that all DMA-related settings are set to auto.
If this still does not work, you can try installing some new IDE drivers, or some utilities that may came with your motherboard, like Intel Application Accelerator.

Problem: Burning does not start / complete and xyz message comes up.
Possible Solution: As you understand the answer cannot be complete without knowledge of the error message, but we will try to find some posible solutions. First of all try to uninstall and install your burning program again, as some files, like drivers may have not be installed correctly. Then try to install an ASPI player, by donwloading ForceASPI from here.
Next thing you need to check is if DMA is enabled. Have a look in the above question to see how to do that.
A final thing you should check is the connection of your DVD-R. I suggest you put it in Secondary Master and, if possible, alone. Have a look and make sure all jumpers are correctly set.

Thanks for the help but none of those aply to me. The burning is fine, quiker in fact, than when i burn a copyd dvd. It works in neither my computer dvd drive or my standalone, You can hear it atempting to read it but fails. I am certain it is not the media as i have used them before and they work fine in both my standalone and my computer.
