I am new to DVD Shrink, and have been loving it so far. So easy to use.

However I have run into an error that is driving me crazy. I have a work around but wanted to find out how to fix it.

Whether I am doing a full backup or a rebuild, this error happens every single time.  (See work around below) I am running the ISO output set to default size.

The error occurs usually near the end of the backup, depending on the DVD, from 85-98% complete.

Here is the actual error text:
---
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Failed to write file \"_______.___\"
There is not enough space on the disk.
---

Initially I was not sure if it was refering to my hard drive or the ISO I was creating. So I deleted a ton of stuff and took my freespace from 10gig to 18gig. Same error occured again. I knew then it had to be refereing to the ISO. So I experimented some more and found that I _have_ to manually adjust the compression on everything to get the size down at least 300meg below the size of the ISO. If I do this, it backs up the DVD no problem.

So, for most movies, I have been doing a custom rebuild using ONLY the movie, compressing it down to there is 300 or so meg free and then and only then does it complete the job.

On some discs I found that I even have to set a custom ISO size of 4300 and then set the movie compression to a size of 3999 to make it backup the movie.

On short/small movies where they are sized under 4 gig, I can copy the whole thing including menus and extras no problem. But if they are larger than the 1 sided DVD ISO, I get this error everytime unless I do the work around.

Any ideas on why its doing this? I know another guy who has used it for a long time and he has never heard of this error before.

I have not heard of this problem before.
Have you got the latest version of DVD Shrink?
Check out www.dvdshrink.org and see if you have the latest one.

Yeppers, I have 3.17. I\'ve removed it and reinstalled it in hoping of clearing this up but to no avail.

Searched around online and found nothing refering to this anywhere. So I am kinda stumped. My work around does the trick but I would prefer to have it work correctly. I dont like losing a little quality because I have to compress it down more.

But aside from that its a quite lovely thing. DVD SHrink I mean.

Yeah, go to My Computer, select the drive, right-click and select properties. Select Tools tab and then Check now.

If you are using WinXP select both the check boxes and click Start. If it is your main drive it will ask you to shedule it for the next time you reboot. Click yes and restart. A screen with letter will come up, just let it do the job!

For Win98 the steps are the same, select bad sectors scan and aut. fix errors and click start. It will not reboot.

I suggest that after the check you\'ll do a defrag. (it\'s under the disc check). Close all programs and do one.

I suggest you do these once a month if you are copying DVDs.
Make sure you have some free type, because they take time, especially if your hard disk is f***ed up.

Ah, I thought there was some disc check thing in DVDS.

I do weekly disk checks on my HD and defrag it etc. The problem however that this error came from is due to a problem with the ISO that DVDS is building. guess I need to report it to the author.

Well I am sure he gets thousands of messages per day, so he will not answer!

Post at the DD DVD Shrink forum as the author of DVD Shrink is there:

Actually if you have FAT32 and not NTFS this is normal as you cannot have files bigger than 4GB. Is this the case?

I think I am on F32, hwen I upgraded to XP I dont think I converted it to the other format. Maybe that is the problem, but the thing is my ISOs are usually 4.2 - 4.3 gig no problem.

When I have the time I will have to explore that option. Good suggestion tho!

Ok. I have official confirmed this as the problem. Due to Fat32\'s 4 gig limit on files, it passes a drive size error on to DVD Shrink, which then tells you indescriptly that there is not enough space.

The solution is to set a custom DVD size of 4 gig and it will rip everytime. Or convert to NTFS (or use a NTFS partition).

Glad to find the answer. Not sure if I want to convert my drive just yet, but will consider it as I do a new install of XP.

I think you can convert without re-installing from the command line. If you have winXP, do it, it\'s very important for DVD stuff that you have NTFS.
