Hi

my problem is this, more often that not when converting avi to dvd it creates 2 folders, disk_0 and disk_1 each contain varying sizes of vob files and each contaning only part of the movie? this will happen with the settings exactly correct for creating a 1 dvd disc? this happens on all version of winavi from 5.8 upto 6.3. only thing i can think is this must be a bug in the software? i looked thru this forum and notice many people have the same problem but nobody offering any real solutions

it does not matter if winavi is converting 1 avi file or 2 avi files and it does not happen all the time?!?! its driving me mad. i really want to use the batch all in one converting that winavi offers but find myself having to revert to using dvdsanta which is slower and has no batch options.

also does anyone know of any other programs that do batch avi to vob conversion?

cheers for looking

I believe it\'s because even though you choose to output to 1dvd you must make sure that the output size is below 4.3 gb and you may have to specify that exactly or you will end up with 2 files. I know i saw it somewhere in the setting properties because i had the same prob but as soon as i corrected the file size...it created 1 folder.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

How long in terms of time is your avi?? If you are talking about 2 hours or more , winavi may create 2 folders as a normal DVD-R/+R holds 2 hours or less.

You can play ard with the bit rate as well.. it may help

Hi guys, thanks for your replys

Pizzaman - I have tried setting my dvd size as the lowest value 3850, do you think typing an even lower number will help?

Cavey - The films vary in length, from standard 90 min films to over 2 hours like you say

Sometimes I will re-encode the same movie again with the same settings it will do it correct, but its very hit or miss!!

It never used to do it so often as it does now either? very strange indeed  :S

No you really shouldnt have to go below the 4.3gb threshold. But i will admit I\'m not 100% on any of those dvd\'s that are longer in length (Lord of the Rings). But even so, If win avi is asking what the output size should be....then it should be compressing it to the correct size in-order to fit on your media.
When you go to the main menu in winavi and select any format to dvd...the next screen you will see advance tab. Go there. these are my settings as follows. select DVD tab....Constant video size is checked, Number of disc is 1 and size is 4300.
Output setting is checked and set for 420 so as to end up with 10min chapters. that could be one of the problems also. If it set to low you will end up with to many chapters that consume some space. target format
is up to you as well everything eles, but i don\'t mess with the audio bitrate but i do have ac3 checked.
Hope this will help.
Pizzaman

What you can also do is if it still is not working correcly

I have this problem as well. So many people seem to be struggling with this and yet there doesn\'t seem to be a resolution to this issue.

I recently converted a file and ended up with DISK_0 and DISK_1

The avi details were as follows;
693MB
1 hr 56 mins duration

I was using WinAVI version 5.5

Anyone got an answer?

Regards

See my post above. I know it works because like i said it happened to me and i easly corrected the prob by manually selecting the output size.

Thanks for the quick \'delivery\' of your reply Pizzaman! I\'ve just got Version 6.3 and can now alter the settings as you suggest. Couldn\'t do it with version 5.5. I\'ll let you know tomorrow how I get on.

Cheers

OK - I got it to work.

The changes I made were;
Upgraded from v5.5 to v6.3

Checked the settings that Pizzaman talked about and found that the disc size was set as default to 4.3Gb. The constant video size was also checked as default.

Under the heading \'Output setting\' checked \'set chapter length\' and set to 420 as PM suggested.

Something I changed which I believe may be the answer was that I selected the correct \'Target Format\' in this case NTSC and selected the correct \'Aspect Ratio\', 4:3. On the last conversion attempt I left this as \'Auto\' for both. This may have resulted in the final size increasing causing WinAVI to split the file into two - DISK_0 and DISK_1

Anyway, those were the differences. Thanks for your help Pizzaman. Hope documenting my experience helps others.

Good luck.
DtM

PS - onto the next conversion ;-)

I am seeing the same hit-and-miss results with 6.3 on various encodes.  Sometimes it makes one folder, sometimes two.  Obviously where the encoded files will end up more than 4700 (my target DVD size) I would expect it to go to two or more disks.
But the resulting set of files in the two folders is often much lower eg. 2.5GB, 3.7GB and there is no obvious reason why the program generated two folders of DVD content.

If I redo the encode, with the same settings, it will often end up with the single folder (correctly).

It really seems like the target size algorithm is not working well at all.  When you think about some of the other encoding programs and their handling of target size (to within a few tens of MBs) WinAVI appears to have a way to go.

Most of the settings I am using are standard ones like Auto, 150 for Chapters.
I\'ll try manually setting the Aspect Ratio and PAL standard.  Take some control away from the program.

Now here is a good one.

Just tried another file again.  700 MB avi file, as used before.  Set it to 4700 MB, 1 disk.  Quality encode.  Forced PAL, 16:9.

It went over the 4700 size, and generated two folders for the content.  Which it shouldn\'t have done, I said I wanted 1 disk.
But, and this is very strange, the first folder had 642 MB in it, the second had 4.2 GB or so. Why that way around?  Fill the first folder, then go to the next.

I think the size calc part of this program is very peculiar, and inconsistent.

hi all, as to the problem (alway generated two folders while you set for 1 disc), I think you also can try following ways to correct it:
On the \"DVD\" tab of the \"Advanced options\" control panel, please select the \"Constant video quality\" as the output mode, and then select lower quality as the output quality. Besides, be sure that the option \"split output size\" is selected, and let the split size as \"1013\" MB.
