| How to convert ratDVD back to DVD |

As we explained in our other guide (DVD to ratDVD) which can be found here, ratDVD is a new DVD backup program, which uses its own file format, with extension .ratDVD. In this file, you can store everything the original disc had (menus, extras, audio tracks, photo galleries etc) which
you can playback just by loading it in Windows Media Player. Note: To follow this guide we assume you have already read the ratDVD to DVD guide, and know how to use ratDVD. If not, have a look there for a detailed explanation of how to use the program and its interface.

What the hell is the point of backing up a DVD this way if you're just going to lose overall quality? Might as will stick with xvid.
Don't waste your bandwidth on this piece of junk. report abuse

wondering...
written by dannyboy, June 02, 2007
could this be useful for converting a dual-layer disc into a single-layer one? few of us have dual layer burners, so i'm hoping to use it for just that. I guess I'm prepared for a significant dip in quality, but hell, it's still better than vhs. besides, I'll probably buy a dual layer burner before i can afford an hdtv. sigh, poverty.

Great software, if you get a movie in that format from the net. Just do your own conversion in your own favorite format. That's it!!! It's like a zip file.

Pointless software
written by SarahD, July 13, 2007
so some total dick posts something in this format, now I either have convert it to something useful or wait until someone else re-posts in a useful format. RatDVD is v-e-r-y---s-l-o-w as well, less than half the speed of any other dvd ripper. A 500Mb RatDVD file takes the same amount of time to convert as a normal 4.3Gb dvd!!! Use Xvid as a format instead, it's quick, great quality, and totally platform compatable. Check out SUPER vid convertor (free)

The idea was damn good... the problem was that code was never released to the comunity and project died too soon... this release was a very early stage... I think if this had a somemore developing would be a great format/tool to share DVDs over the net

It does what it says it will
written by HannahB, September 16, 2007
I only came across this format a few days ago, when I downloaded something with the ratdvd file extension. I'd have been a bit unhappy if I'd had to pay for software to make the dvd usuable in my player, but this is free. I didn't mind the few minutes it took to install it & run through the features, nor did I mind the 8 hours or so it took on a 3-year old pc to convert the dvd to enable me to burn it & play it back successfully. Sure, the question can be asked - is there a need for yet another format? Well, that's like asking if there's a need for another fish pie recipe when there are plenty of other fish pie recipes already available & there are microwave fish pies to buy. The developer made this one & has made it available to us free of charge, & using it today enabled me to remove the bits that I didn't need that I'd have been stuck with otherwise unless I'd searched for software I'd have had to pay for. It does take a long time to do the job (time I might have found unacceptable for software I'd paid for), but it's not like I'm chained to the computer while it's doing the conversion - I've got other things to be getting on with & it finished when it finished, it's no big deal.
No-one's being forced to use it, so I suggest the complainers either spend the time this freeware takes to do the job trying to develop something themselves, pay for something quicker & supposedly better, or just download their dvds in a different format. If they can't find them in another format, then they'll have to either get them another way (borrow them or buy them - there's a novelty) or do without. I honestly think some people complain too much & too quickly. report abuse

Reading through this topic one could be forgiven for thinking it was a rattle throwing competition for three year olds, that is until one reads HannahB's post. She is coherent and makes some good points, unlike the rest of you bitching brats. I'm 20 minutes into decoding a ratDVD file now and it is 23% completed. No big deal because I can be getting on with something else.

I don't know why so many people above complaining about this software.. it may be painfully slow.. but it works, you just have to have a better machine..
and For God Sake it's FREE.. if you count your time to make/backup a full 4,5gb dvd movie including menus only in 1 GB in an excellent quality, trust me it takes more time than what ratdvd does and maybe not that small in size.. you can choose DVD Shrink perhaps, it is quicker but also degrades the movie quality which I don't like In my opinion Ratdvd does a good job. took me 1½ hour to convert a .ratdvd file to .iso and it played fine.. Might not be fast, but have any of you guys ever worked in nandub to create a divx ? Well, buy a second comp, because that will kill all processor power for hours on end.
This format is not needed, nor would I ever use it myself. But for converting .ratdvd files back to base it does a fairly decent job. And well, it's free, never complained about a free lunch, even at a shitty restaurant, and nor will I complain about this piece of software, which actually suited my purpose quite well :) Cheers report abuse

another inaccessible, unreliable, unnecessary, nonessential, cheap and low quality invertion a program was designed for. Lot more irritating than .MKV (the one you can even play in dvdstandalone or any other Vestitile Disc players). It's trash.
I'd rather waiting for long downloads than be patient for something low as 4gb. (25gb wise) report abuse

ratdvd to dvd written by edwig, July 05, 2008
If you want the menus and xtras get a 2nd powerful pc dedicated to the conversions to ratdvd or back to dvd. Downloading ratdvd is a pain when your internet speed is only at 256k so yes better with xvid ddLs but that's without menus & extras. If you dL'd and wish to watch your ratdvd on your wide screen tv i suggest play it via a laptop so no need to convert, or use an old pc lying idle to play the ratdvd onto your tv screen. Go to your local electronics store and get cables to connect from your laptop/pc to your tv monitor. If too troublesome simply forget about ratdvd and stick with xvid.
BTW the ratdvd quality is of similar quality to that of dvdshrink. :D report abuse
