As we explained in our other guide (DVD to ratDVD) which can be found here, ratDVD is a new DVD backup program, which uses its own file format, with extension .ratDVD. In this file, you can store everything the original disc had (menus, extras, audio tracks, photo galleries etc) which
you can playback just by loading it in Windows Media Player. Note: To follow this guide we assume you have already read the ratDVD to DVD guide, and know how to use ratDVD. If not, have a look there for a detailed explanation of how to use the program and its interface.

IM GONNA SHIT ON RATDVD.BAD BAD BAD SOFTWARE.FUCK IT!
Why, God? Why?
written by Ramen, May 17, 2007
What the hell is the point of backing up a DVD this way if you're just going to lose overall quality? Might as will stick with xvid.
Don't waste your bandwidth on this piece of junk.
wondering...
written by dannyboy, June 02, 2007
could this be useful for converting a dual-layer disc into a single-layer one? few of us have dual layer burners, so i'm hoping to use it for just that. I guess I'm prepared for a significant dip in quality, but hell, it's still better than vhs. besides, I'll probably buy a dual layer burner before i can afford an hdtv. sigh, poverty.

wait, those are actually pretty affordable. well, yeah, the program is worthless as far as i'm concerned

Great software, if you get a movie in that format from the net. Just do your own conversion in your own favorite format. That's it!!! It's like a zip file.
One experience=failure

I've downloaded a file with a .ratDVD extension, I've dowloaded ratDVD program: cannot read nor convert the file. I've dowloaded the tools. No sucees. Cannot read the file with Microsoft Media Player.
So a lot of time wasted...

Worst software!
written by Awful, July 08, 2007
This has got to be the most awful program i've ever encountered since learning how to use a computer!
HORRIBLE!! I cant convert nor play nor do anything with the ratdvd's i got! I think this software is secretly designed to encourage gunsales...Why? After using this crappy utility, you'd wanna shoot the programmers and actualy retards who compressed them in this format!
Pointless software
written by SarahD, July 13, 2007
so some total dick posts something in this format, now I either have convert it to something useful or wait until someone else re-posts in a useful format. RatDVD is v-e-r-y---s-l-o-w as well, less than half the speed of any other dvd ripper. A 500Mb RatDVD file takes the same amount of time to convert as a normal 4.3Gb dvd!!! Use Xvid as a format instead, it's quick, great quality, and totally platform compatable. Check out SUPER vid convertor (free)
Painfully slow

Convert ratDVD to DVD in just 3 hours (when the app doesn't stall)! And that's on a 3GHz Duo Core with 2GB RAM...

The idea was damn good... the problem was that code was never released to the comunity and project died too soon... this release was a very early stage... I think if this had a somemore developing would be a great format/tool to share DVDs over the net

The pogram may be slow but it does work. The files are converted into a format that Nero can burn to a DVD.
It does what it says it will
written by HannahB, September 15, 2007
I only came across this format a few days ago, when I downloaded something with the ratdvd file extension. I'd have been a bit unhappy if I'd had to pay for software to make the dvd usuable in my player, but this is free. I didn't mind the few minutes it took to install it & run through the features, nor did I mind the 8 hours or so it took on a 3-year old pc to convert the dvd to enable me to burn it & play it back successfully. Sure, the question can be asked - is there a need for yet another format? Well, that's like asking if there's a need for another fish pie recipe when there are plenty of other fish pie recipes already available & there are microwave fish pies to buy. The developer made this one & has made it available to us free of charge, & using it today enabled me to remove the bits that I didn't need that I'd have been stuck with otherwise unless I'd searched for software I'd have had to pay for. It does take a long time to do the job (time I might have found unacceptable for software I'd paid for), but it's not like I'm chained to the computer while it's doing the conversion - I've got other things to be getting on with & it finished when it finished, it's no big deal.
No-one's being forced to use it, so I suggest the complainers either spend the time this freeware takes to do the job trying to develop something themselves, pay for something quicker & supposedly better, or just download their dvds in a different format. If they can't find them in another format, then they'll have to either get them another way (borrow them or buy them - there's a novelty) or do without. I honestly think some people complain too much & too quickly.

Reading through this topic one could be forgiven for thinking it was a rattle throwing competition for three year olds, that is until one reads HannahB's post. She is coherent and makes some good points, unlike the rest of you bitching brats. I'm 20 minutes into decoding a ratDVD file now and it is 23% completed. No big deal because I can be getting on with something else.

I don't know why so many people above complaining about this software.. it may be painfully slow.. but it works, you just have to have a better machine..
and For God Sake it's FREE.. if you count your time to make/backup a full 4,5gb dvd movie including menus only in 1 GB in an excellent quality, trust me it takes more time than what ratdvd does and maybe not that small in size.. you can choose DVD Shrink perhaps, it is quicker but also degrades the movie quality which I don't like In my opinion Ratdvd does a good job. (sorry 4 my poor english)

took me 1½ hour to convert a .ratdvd file to .iso and it played fine.. Might not be fast, but have any of you guys ever worked in nandub to create a divx ? Well, buy a second comp, because that will kill all processor power for hours on end.
This format is not needed, nor would I ever use it myself. But for converting .ratdvd files back to base it does a fairly decent job. And well, it's free, never complained about a free lunch, even at a shitty restaurant, and nor will I complain about this piece of software, which actually suited my purpose quite well Cheers

ratdvd to dvd
written by edwig, July 05, 2008
If you want the menus and xtras get a 2nd powerful pc dedicated to the conversions to ratdvd or back to dvd. Downloading ratdvd is a pain when your internet speed is only at 256k so yes better with xvid ddLs but that's without menus & extras. If you dL'd and wish to watch your ratdvd on your wide screen tv i suggest play it via a laptop so no need to convert, or use an old pc lying idle to play the ratdvd onto your tv screen. Go to your local electronics store and get cables to connect from your laptop/pc to your tv monitor. If too troublesome simply forget about ratdvd and stick with xvid.
BTW the ratdvd quality is of similar quality to that of dvdshrink.

My friend flew all the way over from the states to scotland just to tell me this software sucks , he sat down had some cookies and milk then went back home.
You know ... i think he's right ( my pc has just finished converting a dvd and i loaded this app way back at the start of last year). Go play with yer dog instead.
Wow.

I can't believe how fucking useless this software is.. "Plays in Media Player" apparently not in Vista 64. Not even any sound in the RatDVD previewer, fuck i don't even have a choice if i want to watch this movie, i HAVE to convert it. Seriously, is the group that made this just too cool for RAR and ZIP? the compression's terrible, lossy as all hell, if i wanted a shitty back up, i'd of done a high compression xvid rendering.
Took my Quadcore (3.6ghz overclocked Q6600 processor) almost 3 hours to convert this piece of shit file back to dvd format (NOT to forget to mention, this is on a 128gig SSD), and then once it was DVD again, it had lost so much quality from the blow ass compression of RatDVD i just deleted it. It doesn't even seem to be multi-threaded as i watched a single core hold a workload of 50-80% (wasn't even maxing the single core?) Piece of shit software, the only thing i've enjoyed about this so far is writing this review about how bad this shit sucks.

IT IS USEFUL - if you need menus
written by RatDVD user, June 17, 2009
1. RatDvd format allowes to shrink dvd to about 1,.. GB of the original 4.7GB file.
So it is easier to share/store your dvd on the net. 2. It keeps all the menus of the original dvd. 3. It is very useful if you want to use it for instructional dvd. For standard dvd movies - less useful ...

Only The Present Is Real
written by integration not accumulation, November 12, 2009
When it comes to stench, it's always stench however one may try to cover it. Why invent more and more "diversity" when it had already been done with satisfactory results. Humans either do things for the better or for the worse. The former is when there is progress whilst the latter is for the sake of confusion, "diversity", airy-fairy pheramone sniffing oka "fashion/religion" and to distract.
Those who distract has only one motive and that is to elevate their status from rock bottom to something "higher" - like power be it financial, status quo and to "smell" better oka worship-saviourship. The name is correct though - Rat. So stupid that only the naïve, innocent and the uninitiated will fall for it. To the "author" of this rat's nest, why are you doing it when it leads to loss of quality, time, effort and resources. Because you think you smell that good? Ahh, for Fame, Fortune & Immortality, that saviour whose job is to gather worshippers. Mind sparing a thought for those at the end of the line who have to endure your scent because you "feel like wafting it around"? The summit of intellect, oka ego, is …. stupidity oka idiocy, and look at all the budding idiotics trying to propagate your scent…. but not when it is a stench, hokay? Put your intelligence into something progressive and loving and your reward will not be dumb worshippers but gratitude - and you can do it - starting NOW. Sharing is about the living whilst accumulation is about the living dead. regardless of how "successful" they seemed on the outside. Still thinking about it? Knew anyone who won't have to die whilst remembering that a memory is the past, oka the living dead. Should your creation be used to promote the living oka a useful utility, that's the living part regardless of your physical manifestation or [past] memory.

Just decrypted 7 seasons of Deep Space Nine

Just downloaded Deep Space Nine from Torrent Leech in .RATDVD format.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Intel core i7 920 CPU I installed 1444 build and after it was installed and the .RATDVD files got the RATDVD program icon on them, I simply right click it and run as admin (second option from above) and it opened perfectly fine in RATDVD. Then you simply convert it to a regular .DVD format and it works flawlessly.

YOU - COMPLAINING - MORONS. Just RENAME the #$%@ .ratdvd file to .iso and BURN IT. I just did it and it worked perfectly. You don't even need the program you're bitching about, but you're all talking about how many hours it takes. At least learn some incredibly basic file h4cking skills if you're going to burn video.

Complaining for free is still valid
written by mojo, July 28, 2010
I strongly disagree with those who say "it's free, just be grateful and stop whining".
Just because it's free, does not mean its good. And just because it's free doesn't mean that you don't have expectations. If you download something that is free and is not living up to your expectations, then you should point that out. How else is it going to be better, and if it can't get better (because someone stopped developing it) then at least you're giving a heads up to someone else whose going to have to otherwise try it out before finding out he's wasted time, effort and bandwidth downloading a piece of software that doesn't work, and a dvd that can't be economically viewed. If you can't take criticism, then perhaps you shouldn't release software. If you can, then perhaps you may actually release some pretty shit-hot software after sorting out the problems.
by the way written by mojo, July 28, 2010
wmx - instead of being a doofus and wasting everybodies time and money encouraging people to burn non-valid iso files I suggest you get a life (or perhaps an age over about 3)
Either you do know it's not possible and you're just an asshole, or you actually don't know, haven't tried to figure it out an you're just an asshole. Leave the grownups do the talking. Write comment
