AVI Split With VirtualDub PDF Print E-mail

When a movie is over 2 hours or when it contains a lot of action you will need to use 2 CDs to put the DivX movie into. In VCDs and SVCDs, DVDx cuts the files automatically, but this can't be happen with DivX, if you use, like us, 2-pass encoding. We will use VirtualDub for chopping the AVI file in two. There are many programs that only do this job and look simple and easy put usually the new AVIs have problems. So first make sure you download VirtualDub for here, wait for the page to load, and let's go!

This is VirtualDub's window. Just click File -> Open Video File and open the AVI file that contains your DivX video.

Time for some settings! Select Video and make sure that Direct stream copy is selected.

Now select Audio and make sure that Source audio and Direct stream copy are selected.

Now click the highlighted button to go to the last frame.

(1) Divide the frame number with 2 and write down the result. In this situation 145416/2 = 72708. Then click button (2) and after that button (3).

Now go Edit -> Go to...

Select Jump to frame number and write down the value you found before. Click OK.

Now click the highlighted button.

Select File -> Save as AVI and save the first part of the movie.

After saving click button (1) and after doing that button (2).

Then click button (1) and then button (2).

Now select again Save as AVI and there you go!

problems burning a splitted .avi file
written by kumar, January 27, 2006
I have this .avi video file I downloaded. I managed to cut it into 2 halfs by this great VirtualDub explanation. I can watch these 2 files perfectly on my computer!
BUT!!! When I burn these files on CD and turn to watch them on my DVD machine, i get the picture upside down on my TV screen, meaning the titles are at the top of the picture (like a mirror).
How do I make it work out perfectly??

I always forget about good'ole VD

Nice tut. and very simple. I wanted to split avis into lots of little bits because they could stream easier to my psp with pimpstreamer(since it's very hard to resume streaming once u have stopped playing[fw 2.8 maybe?]).

Anyway, i got annoyed after splitting one file into >10 bits so i coded a VERY simple program in VB that creates a VD script and even has simple drag and drop functions(first time using em ^^).
I thought it might be useful to some so here it is(source is included and since this thing took me a few hours tops, do w/e u want with the source[though i'd appreciate a little credit where possible ^^]).

All it does is creates a script for VD that splits avis into smaller parts(from 2 to 99999 parts).
Remember to set "Video" > "Direct Stream Copy" b4 u execute the script or u'll be encoding the vids into smaller parts.

If u want your sound to mix well with the video using virtualdub to where its not off from the lips or going slower or faster than the video, simply use full processing mode in stead of the direct stream copy. I did it that way when an error came up and if u read the error it will advice u to do the same thing.
another thing
written by Listen Up, July 21, 2007
It i will take longer processing the movie but it will be better quality. Most of the movies I have placed in virtualdub i use direct stream copy only because it does not give me any errors in telling me sound and vid will be off. So unless u get errors then just use it as stated above. Otherwise try it with full processing mode. I haven't had any probs thus so far. Always check ur movies out before you burn them too. If the sound and vid is off in your player then it will be off if burnt on a cd or dvd.
Decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)?
written by Elliot, August 04, 2007
I downloaded the VirtualDub 1.7.2 version and everytime I try to open a video file (.avi) it says the following -

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VitualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are no suitable.

Can anyone help? Many thanks
Google is your friend
written by ZooKeeper, August 05, 2007
If you're getting an error complaining about a missing codec (Xvid, for example), you might want to do an Internet search for that codec. Amazingly enough, Xvid is a free, GPL codec that you can download and use for free. Next time, use your brain and try to find your own answer. That lump of fat in your head is for more than keeping your ears from touching, you bloody chimp.

written by qazwiz, November 28, 2007
I see all these frame ordinated tools but I need a play and cut/splice tool

just like I had the 16mm or 35mm film (with sound already attached)

I would take my razor blade an cut it where I wanted an then splice together wherever i wanted

any open source "window movie makers" out there?

written by hammrman, December 06, 2007
now that i have split the file in half I have no audio. I have double checked all the settings that were recommended and I even went into full mode to see if that would help, but no go. Any clues what to try??
How much space does it need?! --- I run out of HD space !!
written by Babak, January 06, 2008
Woah! How much space do you need? I'm trying to remove about 10 minutes from an avi file (most of the end credits) but no matter how much room I make, the process runs out of hard disk space!

is there another way of doing that? (I'm basically following the above steps - but only making the first cut/save since I don't want or need to save the end credits). Thanks.
Quality Reduction?
written by AndrewVinci, February 25, 2008
Does splitting an avi lose any quality when saving the two split parts? I assume that it would, but I am not exactly sure how it works, so i thought it best to ask.
some answers
written by dawat, April 11, 2008
Babak: it would seem to me you're using 'full processing mode' instead of 'direct stream copy'. if you are indeed using full processing mode because you must, you should select another codec or play with the quality settings until you obtaina desired file size/quality ratio.

andrewvinci: as long as you use 'direct stream copy' it shouldn't lower the quality. if you use 'full processing mode' it will lower the quality even if you select very high quality settings. (of course in this case it will be almost imperceptible the difference in quality)
thx
