How to extract video, audio or subtitles from a Matroska (.mkv) file Print E-mail

This simple guide will help you extract any video, audio or subtitles stream you may need from within an mkv file for editing or other uses. First of all you need to download this file, which is a zip file that includes all the tools you need, ready to run for your own convenience. Then extract the contents of the zip file, run MKVextractGUI.exe and follow the next steps!

Step1

MatroskaExtract1

This is the screen you should see if you followed the instructions above. Click the button next to the Input area and select the file you want to extract the audio or subtitles from.

TipObviously the way shown in this guide works only for Matroska (.mkv) files and not for any other container that may contain multiple video/sound/subs steams like .ogm for example.

Step2

MatrostaExtract02

After your file is loaded you'll see something like this. Obviously in the Content area (1) you can select which video, audio or subtitles stream you want to extract. In our example we selected the two subtitle streams. Then click Extract (2).

Step3

MatroskaExtract03

Thats it! The extracted files are waiting in the directory the original file was!

Not sure if this is the common mistake with these clear and precise instructions or if it's just a bad day for you. But as for the tools you need to take the mkv extractor and put it into the same install directory as the mkvmerger.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI

are in the same directory then just find the mkvextractor.exe make a shortcut for your desktop and have fun.

I've done all the above. It says it's extracting but nothing is done. What is the proper file extension for an x.264 video clip? I told it to dump the audio as .aac, but still nothing happened.

I would like to approve of the Matroska container, but if better tools don't show up, nobody is going to use it.

KimikoMuffin is right. From the commandline, all pathnames with spaces must be enclosed in double quotes ("). All the GUI does is feed command lines to mkvextract. I had a slightly older version that didn't put the quotes. (Surely anybody who knows how to program would know about that?) Nevertheless, the older 1.5 version didn't work no matter what.

Removing Subtitles
written by ShadyAdy, February 07, 2008
To remove the subtitles completely use the program that comes in the zip called mmg. Add you video file then deselect the subtitle in the list. Remux to another file. Bingo! Subtitle gone. Very quick to do

video is jerky
written by jochem, February 11, 2008
hi
i have a mkv file with following streams:
- track1: video mpeg4/iso/avc
- track2: audio aac/mpeg4/ (FR)
- track3: audio aac/mpeg4/ (EN)
- track4: subtitles s_vobsub)(FR)
- some others like chapters & pictures

Extracting tracks 1, 3 & 5:
- track1 (video) is jerky
- track3 (audio) seems fine
- track4 (sub) give me 2 files idx & sub not direcrly usable (needs vobsub to convert to srt, very long and annoying process)

main issue is video jerky.
is there a fix ?
thanks you

Extracting problem
written by DarkDreamer, April 30, 2008
Once I've "uploaded" the video into MKVextractGUI it lists:

Track ID 1: video (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC)
Track ID 2: audio (A_MPEG/L3)

I selected both and clicked "Extract". It then told me that the extraction was successfull. However when I go into the folder I put it in, only the audio (mp3) file is there, no video. I tried reloading the program and the movie, and the only extracting the video file (Track ID 1) and it just automatically said "Extraction complete" But its nowhere to be found.

Please Help.
