How to convert all video formats to DVD using WinAVI PDF Print E-mail

Final version 6.3 of WinAVI is out and we thought it's a good idea to update this guide so that it contains the proper instructions for the new GUI and features. For those not familiar with WinAVI, let me repeat it's advantages:
- it is very fast! In my computer (AthlonXP 2600+) all the conversions where done between 30 and 55 minutes, depending on the movie lenght. It's probably the one of the faster converters out there.
- it converts to DVD files and not MPEG file. Forget searching for an authoring program and spending another hour to create the DVD files, WinAVI converts directly to DVD files.
- DirectAC3 techology. No need to worry about your AC3 audio and how to preserve it's original quality in the final DVD. WinAVI does it automatically for you.
All all these in a pretty nice price.
Download a free full working trial here. You can buy a WinAVI serial here.

This is the first screen of WinAVI Video Converter. As you can see there are many more conversions you can do except converting to DVD, like Any file to AVI (DivX, XviD), WMV and RealMedia. For this guide, click the button the yellow arrow shows to convert all video formats to DVD!s!

Now you need to select the file you want to convert to DVD. I am using an XviD file for this guide, keep in mind that you can convert all video formats as long as you have the right codecs installed. If you have trouble, come in our forum and we'll be happy to help you! Select the file and click Open to proceed.
Note: That the .srt file you see is a subtitles file. If you download VobSub from our downloads section you can use it among WinAVI to create a DVD with subtitles! Just name it like the movie and put it in the same dir!

OK here select the output directory (1) which is where you want WinAVI to put the files into (this is any directory of your HDD. Make sure you have at least 5-6GB free on that disc.). Then make sure DVD is selected as the output format and then click Advanced (2).

This is the DVD options window. In Output setting (1) you can select the size of the file you want to create. The first setting (Constant video quality) makes the file based on the quality you want, while the second one (Constant video size) creates files that will fit on a DVD. The second option is the one you'd probably want to use. Set chapter length option is the time between the DVD chapters that WinAVI will create. Something like 600secs (10mins) is good here.
Then you select the format of the DVD you want to create (3) and the aspect ratio. Auto works, but if you are sure then select them yourself. In Preference (4) you can select speed or quality. The first one makes the encoding proccess faster while the second creates better quality. I suggest you use the quality setting as the speed is great in that one too and the DVD looks better! Audio bitrate (5) is the quality of the audio WinAVI will create if the source is Mp3. 224000 should be enough. If your movie contains AC3 sound select Enabled DirectAC3 (6) and the original AC3 audio of your film will be copied in the DVD.
To continue click the encode tab.

Here you probably don't want to select anything. Set source target rate to auto and select the source aspect ratio of you know it. Soften picture applies a filter to make the movie look more "soft" while Make upside-down picture has an obvious use, you probably not need (it is used for other conversions mostly, that's why it exists!)
Click OK to continue and get back to the screen in Step 3. There click OK again and the encoding proccess will start.

This window will be the next you'll see. You can open the preview window to see what is being encoded, but that will make the program to do more time, so I suggest you don't open it. Also you can select to shut down the computer when the conversion is finished if you want. After this step the conversion process is over. Notice the great time? Remember you just encoded and authored the DVD!

Finally you can burn your DVD. Since you get back in the main interface select the burn icon and your DVD burner program will launch. Burn the files and your DVD is ready! Enjoy!

As you see WinAVI is very simple, while it's fast and powerful. We created a DVD Video disc from a DivX file in only 10 steps and by using only one program. Download a free full working trial here. You can get a WinAVI serial here.

You can also have a look at the following alternative program suggested by DVD-Guides.com:
ConvertXToDVD - Even more media support, very fast, build-in subtitles and menu support.

Well to answer your questions, usually this program will throw that error when there is a missing codec. If the file can be played in windows media player fine it'll convert fine. =) hope this clears up some stuff
Same problem as symphonia and cotair
written by kor_sakov, May 07, 2005
When I start up the winavi program I get a message that i should have real media codec version 9 or higher installed properly.
My system is not that old and I have version 10.00.00.3646 (and i think it works properly because I can watch the .avi file with it)
When I go further anyway I get the same " can not render the graph , please make sure your media can be played by windows media player " just as the other people .
I can burn a dvd with another programm, but I would like to try winavi because i want to add subtitles and that is just what winavi can do quite easily (according the tutorial)
kind regards

After install klight codec standart. Dont select the subtitle file. Only put subtitle in the folder with your movie.

AVI to DVD
written by outsider, June 08, 2005
I capture, edit and render film from VHS tape by using Pinnacle Studio 9. I render it in AVI format. When converting to DVD using WinAVI my computer freezes, sometimes it popwers down, when a percentage of the AVI has been converted. It is not always the same percentage. I have put three VHS tapes onto DVD using the foregoing method, but it's after several attempts to convert. Any ideas ?
Is there a limit to the size of AVI file which will convert. I have Real Player installed, which apparently contains the right codec.

Coverting with Win Avi e 6.3
written by jgrif101, July 09, 2005
I have converted many Avi files using Win avi 6.3 the weird part is I usually do a batch convert and combine both video 1 & 2 and the conversion goes successfully. I use Nero 8.6.0.12 and I'm using Memorex Dvd-r cds.The burn goes successfully but it won't play in my sony dvd recorder. Anyone having this problem. I have converted and burn some movies fine and others done work. I'm not doing anything different from each one. I'm not sure if its not encoding and converting correctly or leaving some files out somewhere. In the meantime I have switched to a different converter application called "avi divx mpeg to dvd converter version 1.1.7" this works fine but its so slow compared to winavi. If anyone has run across this problem with winavi and nkow of a solution let me know. Tired of making coasters with dvd

6.3 and 7.1
written by maiknyc, January 27, 2006
The 7.1 version of WinAVI is the one that causes the stuttering picture and sound for some people. There is something wrong with that version and most people will tell you to go back to 6.3. Now my problem is that I has the same problem as most people here where the picture would go for like 3 seconds and then freeze. In the 7.1 version there is an option called "Enable DIrecMP2" (or something like that) and when I enabled that the discs always worked and I never had the "3 second freezing" thing. But now I converted back to 6.3 because of the stuttering picture issue - but 6.3 does NOT have the "Enable DirecMP2" option only the "AC3" one - so now I am back to getting the 3 second freezes. I really like the program - but until they fix it I guess I have to deal with the stuttering picture happening every once in a while.

AVI to DVD"
Written by outsider on 2005-06-08 16:54:39

I found i had this problem too, so on my widescreen tv the picture is stretched on one film i just converted (it wasn't on the last avi i converted though).

I'm thinking next time i use winavi, i will let it auto choose my aspect ratio instead of 'telling' it to make it 16:9. I don't know if this has anything to do with why the picture came out stretched so am not sure it will help/work, but shall try it next time

Fortunately, with my standalone dvd player, and i expect most standalone's that people have, by going into the setup menu, i changed the aspect ratio from 16:9 to '4:3 letter box' and now the movie is playing with the top and bottom borders and no stretching. Hope this helps.
Problem Converting .avi to DVD with WinA
written by michaelo, February 28, 2006
I converted an .avi generated with Adobe Premier (created with content from a PAL video camera) to DVD format using WinAVI. The DVD files played fine on my laptop (using WINDVD), they also played fine on my TV via S-video cable from my laptop, BUT after burning the files to a DVD and playing the DVD on my home DVD player - some of the content (sides + top & bottom) got cut off. Any insight as to why this might be happening and/or how I can rectify it would be greatly appreciate.

problems with 7.5
written by eldeecee, May 22, 2006

Hello,

I was wondering if people who are using ver 7.5 is having problems with the video getting distorted when converting from avi to dvd? I am trying to figure out why it would do that. I have the codecs installed (using Defilerpak) but for the life of me I can't figure out why it is doing this. Any ideas? I had no problems before upgrading from 7.1.
Re: problems with 7.5
written by x2uiw, May 26, 2006
I'm using v7.5 and I haven't encountered any problems with video distortion whatsoever when I convert .avi files to dvd. I'm not sure what it is that causes these distortions... You could try unintalling and reinstalling the program. Sorry I couldn't help.
DVD Burning
written by davidcatherall, June 17, 2006
I have just bought the full version of AVI - converted the first avi to DVD.

The problem I have is that when I click on the burn to DVD icon, it fires up Nero!
And although there is an option in Nero to burn the file to a DCD - when I place the DVD in my player it refuses to accept the format.

How can I get the Burn to DVD option working properly on Win Avi please?

written by devocap, March 12, 2007
I have had great success with winavi. It is indeed faster than anything else out there. I have had success using this program to convert, then using nero express, or nero vision for the burning. However there are some avi files which when I try to convert, an error occurs and prompts winavi to close. I have also had a problem with the dvd player being unable to play some dvds due to size problems. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx.
solution i've found helpful
written by boogie woogie, March 13, 2007
when you get a error that says something like: I get this Error "OutDir Can Not Include 4 " ....OR..."I get this Error "OutDir Can Not Include _ "........it means whatever you named the file is incorrect. In the above cases, remove the underscore [_] in the file name and remove the number [4]. Simply rename the file you're trying to convert to its name with no underscores, numbers etc and it works fine. EXAMPLE1: instead of Santa_Claus_Rocks,etc rename it simply SantaClaus or Santa Claus. Example2: Santa Claus 4, simply Santa Claus. Hope this helps.

Home dvd player problems?
written by Risewell, April 21, 2007
If your converted video does not play on your Sony DVD player it's because (from my experience) Sony players don't like home made videos (or some audio cd's for that matter). So you pay a lot of money for that Sony Dvd player expecting a helluva lot.

WinAvi 8.0 and burning
written by mooowl, June 24, 2007
Hi, I have a problem when trying to burn onto DVD-R discs, usually I have no problem but recently I dowloaded a file which I had to increase the output size when converting from Avi to DVD which wasn't a problem for my computer nor for WinAvi. The problem came when trying to burn, after selecting the file I was told that the file size was too big for the 4.7GB disc, I made an educated gues in thinking that the file I converted is longer than 120Min, so, can I change the recording time of the disc using WinAvi (The box says its possible to extend 120 minutes (SP mode) to 360 minutes depending on the recorder)and if not is there another program I can use to do so?

Any repply will be aprreciated.

I tried to convert from rmvb to mpg files. The pictures are fine but there's no sound. Is it because the rmvb file is a hd file? Please help

playing rmvb converted to DVD problem on DVD-Player
written by em, May 25, 2009
I am having same problem playing on DVD-player after converting the Winavi converting rmvb files to DVD. The conversion play fine on the computer and DVD disc play on computer also play fine. But once I try to play on the DVD-Player and some parts have skipping and jitters.

By the way, I have all the necessary codec. And the rmvb to DVD conversion is fine. And play fine on computer.

I even try to convert the rmvb to avi first and then to DVD format but the jitters and skips on various parts still happened.

Anyone have any solutions to this?

Watermark on the trial version
written by Thomas22, June 30, 2009
They tell you to note that the trial version has a watermark. That would be fine. However, they neglect to mention that the watermark appears in the CENTRE of the screen, rendering the film unwatchable and wasting your disc. This doesn't make me want to pay for their service. In fact, it makes me rather dislike them.

Beware.
